The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) launched job fair to hire workers for its infrastructure projects.
The DPWH is spending P60 billion, which is a part of the stimulus package, in the first half of 2009 for construction projects nationwide.
The agency aims to generate 5000,000 jobs in the construction sector for 2009.
The job fair is co-sponsored by the department of Labor and Employment, the National Constructors Association of the Philippines, and the Philippines Constructors Association, Inc.
The agency advertised for machi9ne operators, drivers, carpenters, electricians, masons, laborers and foremen. There were also vacancies for engineers, surveyors and clerks.
The DPWH said that the pump priming initiative consists of maintenance and construction of roads, bridges, school buildings, and flood control facilities and would employ 50 percent unskilled workers and 30 percent skilled workers while the rest would be professionals employed by contracting companies.

According to Mrs. Lucia V. CastaƱeda the public information officer of DPWH Region V, at least 360 were hired from the 742 applicants.
There are at least 87 government pump priming projects are up for implementation amounting to P2,923,790.00 in Bicol region.
Director Orlando Roces said that the program “Programang Pangtrabaho ni Pangulong Gloria” aims to forge a way out of the world economic crisis.
